What is the Archives?
An archives is a place where items of historical
interest are housed to be kept in good condition for
ever.
The Girl Guide Archives
houses:
- Many pieces of paper
including Guiders' and camp logs which have been
created in
Nova Scotia by girls and women in the
movement over the past ninety plus years.
- Uniforms, Badges,
Artifacts and publications related to Guiding, worn
or used by
former members of the Movement in the
province.
- Photographs and
newspaper clippings collected since Guiding began in
NS.
Why do we have an
archives?
In order make sure that the Guiding story
is part of the whole story of Nova Scotia.
It tells the
story of what girls did in earlier times.
Where is the Archives?
Girl Guide House on Dutch Village Road in Halifax
When is the Archives
open? How can we see what is there?
If a group
wishes to visit the archives we can open after hours and
on weekends BUT we need lots of warning so that we can
prepare ahead of time.
A phone call or an email will start the
process.
How can the Archives
help Guiders?
With Lending kits.
We
have put together two Lending Kits, one for Guides,
Pathfinders, and Brownies. Each contains 24 items,
together with a question for each and an answer key for
leaders' use. A Guider can borrow the kit and use it in
her group to show many items which were used in packs
and companies in the early years, which will help the
girls understand the History of the Guide Movement.
There is a small fee to borrowing a kit. Please see Archive Loan Form.
With Loan of Uniforms
There are a number of Canadian Uniforms available that
girls can wear for a display or fashion show. When you
request uniforms you will receive some Guide, Brownie,
Ranger and Leaders uniforms from earlier periods in our
Guide movement in Nova Scotia. These are very popular
around Thinking Day but are available at other times of
the year. There is also a collection of International
Brownie Uniforms that are suitable for Brownies to wear
to represent the concept of Brownies around the World.
These could be used in the same manner for a show or
display. Uniforms are loaned on a first come first
served basis and there is a small fee per uniform for
doing so. Please see Archive Loan Form.
How Can Guiders Help
the Archives?
Send to us Photographs, labeled using
a post-it note, with event, date, names of participants.
